Former U.S. Rep. Howard Coble, North Carolina Republican, died late Tuesday evening at the age of 84, local outlets reported.

Mr. Coble, who was first elected in 1984 and left Congress in January, had been hospitalized in September for complications related to skin cancer.

Sen. Richard Burr, North Carolina Republican, said in a statement Wednesday that Mr. Coble was “a true statesman” who represented his constituents with passion and effectiveness.
