Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu said Monday that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush erred by going after Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida at last week’s GOP presidential debate and that Mr. Bush should instead focus on “the two dancing bears at the top” if he wants to challenge someone.
“Of all the things I saw at the debate, I think that’s the biggest mistake Jeb Bush made,” Mr. Sununu said on Fox News. “I don’t think there’s anything to be gained by going after a serious candidate like Rubio.
“If he wants to go after somebody, he ought to go after the two dancing bears at the top,” said Mr. Sununu, a former chief of staff to President George H.W. Bush.
Mr. Bush, the former Florida governor, tried to hit Mr. Rubio on his attendance and voting record in the U.S. Senate during the debate, but many felt Mr. Rubio got the better of Mr. Bush in the exchange.
Billionaire businessman Donald Trump and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson have separated themselves a bit from the rest of the GOP pack in polling on the Republican nomination race. Mr. Sununu has previously referred to those two candidates as “really entertainment at this point.”
