OPINION:
In searching for a strategy against the Islamic State, President Obama should call for and arm a volunteer brigade of U.S. Muslims to fight the terrorist group. Politically incorrect? No way. Just as men in my German-American family went into uniform to fight the Germans in World Wars I and II, American Muslims should be asked to show their loyalty to the United States through their action now. Joining the war against Islamic terrorism, they would prove what they say: ’We’re not jihadists and we loathe their actions.’ It will be telling to see how many step forward.
Second, Mr. Obama should call for an international army of civilized Muslims to march into the Middle East against the Islamic State.
And next he might ally temporarily with the Russians in the fight against these terrorists, just as we did with the Soviets against the Nazis during World War II. We hated Moscow’s principles then, as we do now. But now the expedient matter is to win the war. To save our values, for a time we must redact our values.
