The first step in talking about the situation in Israel should be to correct any misconceptions relating to the current Arab-Israeli conflict (“Obama, Netanyahu to discuss U.S. military aid to Israel,” Web, Nov. 8). Despite statements to the contrary from the Obama administration, settlement activity during the Netanyahu administration has been markedly curtailed, with settlements being dismantled and restrictions placed on the growth of communities outside of the pre-1967 temporary armistice lines. Second, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has no credibility with the Israeli electorate, as he has encouraged the present intifada and has refused to negotiate in good faith with the present Israeli government.

Until the Obama administration accepts the security needs of Israel, a nation surrounded by enemies intent on its destruction, there will be no peace, and U.S. support of Israel is warranted. Hopefully President Obama will be accommodating both on Israel’s defense needs and the increased funds needed to ensure this. However, based on previous actions by our president, I would not expect it.
