MILWAUKEE — A gay-centric Internet company has interjected its lifestyle issue into the Republican debate here Tuesday with a billboard that features a cartoon unicorn and elephant purported to be homosexuals.

Hornet, a gay dating and social network with about 7 million users, put up the billboard in downtown near the debate venue at the Milwaukee Theater. It features a highly stylized drawing of a small unicorn and large elephant, both holding smartphones.

Text bubbles read: “Into?” and “open to debate.”

Hornet CEO Sean Howell said that he was relieved to see the billboard approved and erected in time for the Republican debate.

“For some the race offers a spectacle and for others it is depressing,” he said in an email announcing the billboard.

“We thought the LGBT family in Milwaukee could use a little rainbow in the cold, so we sent a unicorn talking to a famous elephant,” he said. “Our users don’t enjoy full rights all over the world, which is a big reason we like to interject into politics when possible.”

Gay rights issues are not expected to be a top issue in the debate, which is hosted by Fox Business and the Wall Street Journal and has been promoted as focusing on economic issues.
