Russia advances law to close down ‘undesirable’ foreign organizations

Legislation to remove “undesirable” foreign and international organizations from Russian soil just moved forward in the nation’s parliament.

The preliminary approval for the legislation opens the door for increased scrutiny of non-governmental organizations that receive foreign funding, The Associated Press reported.

The bill was easily passed by Russia’s lower house on Friday with a vote of 442 to 3, AP reported.

Organizations that fail to live up to a threshold determined by Russian prosecutors will be designated “a threat to the foundation of the constitutional order,” AP reported.
