A magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred off the coast of northeastern Japan, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The earthquake struck the same region that was hit devastated by a strong earthquake and a tsunami in 2011.

There is no risk of a tsunami, authorities said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
