An Ohio gay rights activist has been charged with making false claims on social media for allegedly lying about his own kidnapping. His tweets went viral on social media as people scrambled to help him.
“Please help me I’m in the trunk of my ford escort red 2000 gbh 2812. They said they are going to kill my family,” Adam Hoover tweeted early Tuesday morning after leaving his job at Chipotle.
“Please please call. I don’t want to die,” he added.
Mr. Hoover, the co-president of Marriage Equality Ohio, had his story picked up by The Huffington Post before police found him and determined that the kidnapping was a hoax. The hastag #FindAdamHoover also picked up steam — his tweet was shared over 1,100 in the middle of the night.
A local Fox affiliate reported Tuesday that calls flooded into a Hamilton County emergency communications center before Mr. Hoover was found.
