The body of David Christopher Bird, a Wall Street Journal reporter who went missing after going for a hike last January, has been found near the site of his disappearance, according to New Jersey police.
The body, found Wednesday by people canoeing on the Passaic River, was identified as Mr. Bird, 55, through dental records Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported. The grisly discovery came the same day his family launched a website dedicated to his search, the newspaper said.
The energy reporter, who worked for Dow Jones for more than two decades, was last seen leaving his home to go for a short walk in the woods on Jan. 11, 2014.
Mr. Bird leaves behind a wife and two teenage children.
“The Bird family would like to thank the many members of law enforcement, especially Chief Michael Mazzeo and the Long Hill Township Police Department, for their tireless efforts to find David,” said Carolyn Buscarino, a spokeswoman for the family. “They would also like to thank the countless friends, neighbors and strangers who have prayed for David and for the family over the past 14 months.”
An investigation into Mr. Bird’s death is ongoing, officials said.
