Taya Kyle, the widow of slain Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, plans to release a memoir detailing the request she made of her late husband to leave the military.

The book, “American Wife: A Memoir of Love, War, Faith and Renewal,” will go through Mrs. Kyle’s life as a military spouse, including the day her husband was killed.

“I asked Chris to leave the military and he made the decision to get out and be with our family, and looking back now I don’t think I ever realized how painful of a decision that was for him,” Mrs. Kyle said in a June 2013 video released by publisher William Morrow, ABC News reported Tuesday. “He saw himself as a guardian angel. He didn’t care about the number of kills. He cared about the number of lives he saved.”

Mrs. Kyle will discuss the book during a “Good Morning America” interview on May 1. The book will be released May 4, ABC reported.

The life of Kyle, the most lethal sniper in American history, was famously depicted in Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper,” which has made over $500 million worldwide and won an Oscar for best sound editing. The movie is the highest-grossing domestic film of 2014.

In February, Eddie Ray Routh was convicted of killing Kyle and fellow veteran Chad Littlefield on Feb. 2, 2013, during a trip to a Texas gun range. Kyle and Mr. Littlefield were hoping to help the ex-Marine, who suffers from PTSD, when they were ambushed from behind.
