According to the Associated Press, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled 7-2 today that a 6-foot granite monument containing the Ten Commandments must be removed from the grounds of the Capitol because the display benefits a religion.
Though the monument was privately funded by a Republican legislator, the court ruled that the words on the display are “obviously religious in nature and are an integral part of the Jewish and Christian faiths.”
“Quite simply, the Oklahoma Supreme Court got it wrong,” Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt said in a statement. “The court completely ignored the profound historical impact of the Ten Commandments on the foundation of Western law.”
