I am an ardent, self-proclaimed vaccine advocate who strongly believes that every child — except those who cannot for medical reasons — should get vaccinated for deadly and contagious childhood diseases (“California Legislature passes strict school vaccine bill,” Web, June 29).

The decision now of some parents not to have their children vaccinated, for personal reasons, does not just affect their own children’s health, but potentially the health of countless others. Thinking only of your own children is a very selfish, narrow-minded choice.

I therefore hope that California Gov. Jerry Brown signs the bill that has been firmly approved by California’s legislature and would require vaccinations for all children, except those who for medical reasons cannot receive them.

This bill would, to paraphrase British philosopher and social reformer Jeremy Bentham, do the greatest good for the greatest number of children.
