OPINION:
Recently Secretary of State John Kerry issued a draconian proclamation in defense of the Iran deal. He warned that if Congress rejects the plan, “Our friends in this effort will desert us.” The dreadful irony of this statement immediately arrested me.
Finalizing this deal is tantamount to deserting our best friend in the Middle East, Israel. The irony continues in another way: In countless hours of intense diplomacy, our administration was unable or unwilling to secure the release of the four American hostages being held in Iran. Meanwhile, the deal will hold the entire nation of Israel hostage to a rogue regime. Israel will be beholden not only to our administration’s shaky support but also to the whims of a radicalized Islamic nation state. That, I contend, is no way to treat our “friends.”
