Police in Cornwall, Ontario, went well beyond the call of duty this week by reportedly helping an elderly couple buy back a wedding ring they had pawned to put food on the table.

Officers were called to an elderly couple’s home on a domestic disturbance call, Councillor Andre Rivette told the local city council Monday night, The Blaze reported.

The wife was suffering from dementia and her husband of 54 years said he was finding it increasingly difficult to care for her and pay for groceries. He told police that he had to pawn his beloved wedding ring to make ends meet, Cornwall Seaway News reported.

The officers gathered nearly $300 among themselves to help the couple pay for groceries and buy the ring back.

“This really shows that our officers have a heart,” Mr. Rivette told the council.

The officers are expected to receive a commendation from the police services board for their efforts, Seaway News reported.

The Alzheimer’s Society and Community Care Access Centre have been made aware of the elderly couple’s situation and are now helping with the case, Seaway News reported.
