OPINION:
The 2015 Academy Awards was simply the final round of Hollywood celebrating itself again — and again and again. Alas, with few exceptions the film and entertainment industry continues to decline into little more than sex, violence, shallow stories and a lack of imagination and original thought reduced to narcissism resembling “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
As for the exceptions, mostly true stories such as “Selma,” “The Theory of Everything,” “The imitation Game,” “Foxcatcher,” “American Sniper,” “Boyhood” and “Whiplash” rounded out the exceptions. However, “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” overshadowed them all with the darkness of mass neurosis that consumes the hopelessly self-involved. “Best Picture” and “Best Director”? Hardly.
Certainly the only clarity coming from the Oscars dog-and-pony costume show was the host with the least, Neil Patrick Harris, those promoting liberal social and political issues and the whiners. Snubbing the genuine talent and integrity of the real best director, Clint Eastwood, epitomizes the intolerance and the ongoing lack of morality that is Hollywood.
However, the name fits. Holly is supposed to be a symbol of joy — yet its leaves are extremely prickly, guarding a soul of wood. Society needs a do-over.
