Vice President Joseph R. Biden said he made the right decision not to run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, even though he believes he could have won.

“I believed I could win, but that’s not enough,” Mr. Biden told Bloomberg in an interview. “My decision, I know, was the right decision.”

The vice president announced in October that he would not challenge Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and her rivals, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley of Maryland, for the nomination. He said he and his family are still grieving the death of his son Beau, 46, from brain cancer in May.

“I know myself. And I know it takes time,” Mr. Biden said. “You’ve got to get through the first Thanksgiving — the first empty chair; the first Christmas, the first smell of spring.”
