Bowling Green State University has fired men’s basketball head coach Chris Jans following “an investigation into his recent public conduct,” the college announced Thursday.

Several media outlets obtained a termination letter from the university and a March 21 video that showed the first-year coach and married father of two slapping a woman on the buttocks at a local bar.

An eyewitness account, emailed to Bowling Green athletics director Christopher Kingston and obtained by Deadspin, also alleged that Mr. Jans called the witness’ daughter a “bitch” and at one point grabbed a woman’s head and “pushed it downwards toward his crotch.”

Bowling Green said Mr. Jans’ “public conduct failed to meet his obligations as a head coach,” but did not specify what the conduct was.

Mr. Jans led the Falcons to a 21-12 record — a nine-game improvement — in his first year at Bowling Green. He reportedly signed a six-year deal last year and was earning $325,000 annually, the New York Post reported.

Assistant Mark Downey is taking over day-to-day operations of the program as they search for a new replacement, The Associated Press reported.
