House Speaker John A. Boehner hinted this week that there could be a new sheriff in town in relatively short order.
In an interview on Bloomberg Television, he was asked how much longer he would like to be speaker. His reply?
“I don’t know. We’ll see. I take this one day at a time,” Mr. Boehner.
“I take it one day at a time. I enjoy what I’m doing. Some days are more fun than others, I will say that. But I came here to fight a fight for a smaller, less costly and more accountable government,” Mr. Boehner said. “So I’m engaged in that fight, and as long as I am, I’ll be here.”
He said it would be “way less” than 10 years and “probably” less than six.
Asked if it would be less than four, Mr. Boehner said, smiling, “let’s not get into this — I’m not going to be here forever.”

“Let’s put it this way — I told my staff about five years ago, ’If I’m 70 years old still walking around here, somebody just shoot me,’ ” the 65-year-old said. “All right? I’m not going to be one of these guys that dies in the saddle.”
