HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s main power company and solar energy system companies are blaming each other for delays in connecting home photovoltaic installations to the power grid.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser (https://bit.ly/YeCDXm) reports about 4,400 rooftop solar applications on Oahu are waiting to be approved by Hawaiian Electric Co. and the process is taking up to nine months.
HECO last year required that photovoltaic installations be approved by the utility before connecting to the grid.
CEO Dick Rosenblum says solar companies need to work with the utility to fix technical problems that are stalling connections.
Solar company executives say HECO has not done enough to prepare for a surge in rooftop solar.
Haleakala Solar founder Jim Whitcomb says HECO should embrace rooftop solar instead of fighting it.
