CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Recent heavy rain and congested rail lines have caused a Powder River Basin coal company to lower its production estimates for this year.
Cloud Peak Energy estimated Tuesday its 2014 production will be between 83 and 86 million tons. Its previous estimate was between 85 and 89 million tons.
Gillette-based Cloud Peak operates the Cordero Rojo and Antelope mines in northeastern Wyoming and the Spring Creek Mine in southern Montana. Heavy rain in August caused flooding and damaged equipment at Cordero Rojo.
The company doesn’t anticipate production to rise soon, projecting annual production between 78 and 84 million tons in 2015 and 2016.
The Gillette News-Record reports (https://bit.ly/1qc2VE5) those figures largely result from plans to cut production at Cordero Rojo by around 10 million tons starting in 2015.
