ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah (AP) - Rescuers in Zion National Park have found the body of a 34-year-old hiker who was overdue.

National Park Service spokesman David Eaker says the man was found Sunday afternoon in the Virgin River Narrows area.

The man and a male companion were hiking Saturday when rains came and the river began rising rapidly, prompting them to take refuge on high ground.

Eaker says in a news release that after several hours, the companion swam the flooding river to safety, while the 34-year-old man remained where he was.

He alerted park rangers, but they determined the river was running too high to safely enter at night, plus the man was thought to be in a safe place.

Teams located the man’s body on the river bank around 2 p.m. Sunday.

There was no word on a possible cause of death.

His name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.
