PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The Federal Transit Administration is providing an $800,000 grant for improvements to Acadia National Park.

The money will be used for planning and construction of the Acadia Gateway Center Intermodal Facility and Acadia National Park Welcome Center. The intermodal facility is designed to improve access to the Island Explorer propane-powered bus system. Officials say the transit system will reduce congestion and pollution in the national park, most of which is located on Mount Desert Island off of Maine’s coast.

The Maine Department of Transportation will receive the grant. Acadia is Maine’s only national park.
