Regarding Charles Hurt’s commentary column “It’s time for bicycle sense in America” (Web Sept. 23), a bicycle speed limit for cycling anywhere other than the roads would make good sense. Despite being an avid cyclist and a very strong and active supporter of cycling as a primary means of transportation, I wouldn’t object to “reckless cycling” fines, either. (I hesitate a bit because of the vague way such things could be selectively enforced.)

Don’t scoff at the idea of a ban in the parks, though: After all, New York’s then-mayor, Michael R. Bloomberg, pushed a smoking ban through there, and he didn’t even have a body to point to. Pump a few hundred million dollars a year into a “bicycle control” campaign, and we could quite easily build up enough hatred toward the two-wheeled minority to make it acceptable.
