KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - An economist says he sees positive signs for the Hawaii Island economy.
Jack Suyderhoud says tourism is thriving in Kohala on the island’s northwest side.
Speaking Thursday at the 40th annual First Hawaiian Bank economic outlook forum, Suyderhoud says tourism arrivals dropped off at the end of 2013 but began to rebound in July.
West Hawaii Today (https://bit.ly/YjG1zD) reports he also sees positive signs in construction.
He says Tropical Storm Iselle may spur job growth in construction.
He says only about 3,600 of the 11,000 construction jobs that were lost during the recession throughout the state have been recovered.
On the Big Island, 900 of the 3,000 jobs lost have come back.
