The guillotine was used as the preferred method of execution during the French Revolution, as it was thought to be a more humane and quick way to put someone to death.

The recent beheadings of two American journalists and a French tourist by the Islamic State, aka ISIS, or ISIS-affiliated groups have evoked horror in the eyes of the civilized world, as in today’s world it is thought to be a cruel, barbaric and grotesque way of executing people.

So the way we perceive beheadings has changed 180 degrees. Does that mean that most of the world is now civilized or that ISIS is particularly savage and evil?
