OPINION:
It’s unfortunate that the technology involved in the use of cameras to identify traffic violators has been hijacked by bureaucrats intent on getting more funds under their control. When properly used, the technology could provide an objective and efficient way to identify those drivers who repeatedly flout the traffic laws and unnecessarily hazard the rest of us.
We don’t need more funds for politicians to spend. We need to identify the irresponsible drivers and turn them into pedestrians or passengers. Ditch the fines and start handing out points. This would also remove much of the incentive to set unrealistic speed limits, hide speed-limit signs, shorten the yellow-light times and use other techniques that maximize the income from the cameras, but only harass the majority of drivers.
