OPINION:
As we Americans observe the 13th anniversary of the atrocity of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our nation, I can’t help but think that today we are more vulnerable to destruction by al Qaeda than ever. Clifford D. May’s column (“Thirteen years later,” Commentary, Sept. 10) spells it out emphatically when he writes that Iran’s pursuit of and eventual capability to produce nuclear weapons will inevitably allow such weapons to fall into the hands of terrorists whose sole aim is the annihilation of the infidels (us).
Couple that with a do-nothing, lax president who will not defend our borders and who has emasculated and downsized our military and removed U.S. troops from the Middle East, and we are primed for the taking.
For the sake of our children and our children’s children, is there no one who will stand against this mindset and come up with a clear plan to protect us? A strong and aggressive military defense is our best chance to stem the rise of the Islamic State and its goal of a worldwide caliphate and to defeat it. I think this is a winning message for the 2016 presidential election — if we can endure that long.
