More Americans than ever disapprove of President Obama’s response to the terrorist army known as the Islamic State, with a new poll released Wednesday showing a majority of voters say he’s doing a bad job confronting the situation.

The CBS News poll showed that 40 percent of voters approve of how Mr. Obama is handling the Islamic State, also known by the acronym ISIL or ISIS. But a 51-percent majority disapprove.

The increase in disapproval comes despite Mr. Obama’s stepped-up efforts to combat the terrorists, who have overrun a large swath of territory across Syria and Iraq.

The same poll last month showed support for the president’s actions against the Islamic State split 39 percent approval to 48 percent disapproval.

The dwindling popularity of the president’s foreign policy only adds to the woes of Democratic candidates heading into midterm elections, with terrorism remaining a top concern of voters and Republicans holding a commanding lead when it comes to who handles terrorist threat best.

The poll showed that 53 percent of voters favor the Republican Party for dealing with terrorism, compared to 32 percent who pick the Democratic Party on that question.
