CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s $18 billion tourism industry continued its strong rebound from the depths of the Great Recession this summer.
The latest figures from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism show that revenue per available room - a key indicator of the health of the industry - was up more than 11 percent during July compared with the same month a year ago.
Revenue per available room statewide is now about $95 and is also up 11 percent so far this year.
Forecasters are predicting a slight increase in room occupancy during October with a small decline expected next month. The increase in revenues comes at a time when tens of millions of dollars in new tourism investments are being announced.
