Is America a democratic republic? Is this country’s freedom preserved under the separation of church and state? If so, marriage is a fundamental right for all.

Mario Diaz blatantly denies this in “Marriage is not on trial, but America is” (Web, Oct. 10). Mr. Diaz seems to prefer that incongruous, theocratic principles govern in a democratic society. It is time he accepted the new cultural norms in the 21st century.

Constitutionally, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” defines America. This has led many states to recognize homosexual marriage as a fundamental right. Marriage involves privacy, association and liberty — homosexual or straight. Thus, 30 states have legalized homosexual marriage. The legalization of homosexual marriage in the remaining states is inevitable.

Mr. Diaz and opponents of homosexual marriage have already lost.
