The crash of a Hawker Hunter MK-58 jet, a swept-wing British fighter jet, near Port Hueneme, California, resulted in the death of its pilot and severe injuries to a passenger, the Los Angeles Times is reporting.

The crash site is about 70 miles north of Los Angeles.

A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft crashed “under unknown circumstances,” according to the Los Angeles Times. The Times is reporting that the destination of the jet is also unknown. The nearest naval base to the crash site is Naval Base Ventura County. 



The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
