While humanitarian help for the beleaguered Christian communities in the Middle East should be high on our list of immediate concerns, the recent history of the region indicates that in a few years most of the nations in it will be Christian-free (“Help desperately needed for Middle East Christians,” Web, Oct. 27).

As a parallel, during and in the aftermath of the Arab-Israeli war designed to destroy the then-nascent state of Israel, more than 1 million Jews were expelled by Muslim nations from their ancestral Arab lands of some 2,000 years. While Jews may have been considered second-class citizens of these nations, at least they were not subject previously to mass exodus.

Because radical Islam has become dominant in the Middle East, Christians should expect nothing less than threats of death, expropriation and ultimate expulsion. Sad to say, the era of Christian presence in the Middle East has, except in Israel, come to an end. All efforts should be made to ensure the Middle East’s Christians’ safe departure.
