ANALYSIS/OPINION

Embattled Sen. Mark Udall, Colorado Democrat, facing a strong challenge from Republican Rep. Cory Gardner and an avalanche of health insurance cancellations in his state, appears to be cracking under the pressure.

Speaking with Denver Channel 7’s Marc Stewart Friday, Mr. Udall stumbled through a typical, better-know-a-candidate request: “Name three of the most influential books in your life and the last song you listened to.”

Mr. Stewart had jokingly referred to his request as one of the “tough questions,” and Mr. Udall apparently took it to heart.

Mr. Udall was quick to name President John F. Kennedy’s “Profiles in Courage,” before drawing blank and asking if they could “retape this.” When Mr. Stewart tried to save the painfully awkward interview by reiterating the song question, Mr. Udall said “I’m brain dead today.”

After another prodding, Mr. Udall eventually named Hampton Sides’ “In The Kingdom of Ice” and James Michener’s “Centennial” as his literary influences and Sean Colvin’s “Shotgun Down The Avalanche” as the last song he listened to.

Even on policy, Mr. Udall fumbled; when asked “Is Common Core good or bad for Colorado students,” he responded “Yes.”
