An Iowa doctor who was running for U.S. Senate as a libertarian candidate in Iowa died Monday night in a plane crash near Dubuque Regional Airport.
Dr. Douglas Butzier was the pilot of the plane that crashed around 11 p.m. Monday as it approached the airport. He was the sole occupant of the aircraft, police said, a local ABC affiliate reported.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford said the plane took off from Ankeny Regional Airport about an hour before the crash.
Butzier, 59, was reportedly running as a libertarian against Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley and Republican Joni Ernst. He had been an emergency medicine physician in Dubuque for 17 years, The Blaze reported.
