OPINION:
There seems to be an endless supply of stories in the news these days about efforts across our nation to remove the Ten Commandments from public places. Why do people in our culture have so much hate for a list of rules that stop hatred? What is so offensive about rules for civilized human conduct, rules that tell us not to murder, steal, lie, desire something wrongfully or commit adultery, rules that also direct us to respect our parents?
We are bombarded daily via all forms of media with images of violence, depravity, offensive behavior and foul words. I do not see focused efforts to remove these visuals from our culture. As a former police officer, I can honestly say that if people followed the Ten Commandments, we would see an unprecedented drop in the crime rate and a safer, brighter community for everyone. We hear a lot today about “hate speech.” Well, one could accurately categorize the Ten Commandments as “love speech.” Hasn’t the time come for us to stop hating speech that stops the hating?
