OPINION:
With the change in the balance of power in the U.S. Senate, I hope the two political parties will work together to support foreign aid and improve U.S. policies in that regard.
The United States could and should do so much more in foreign aid. We are one of the wealthiest nations in the world, yet many of our allies spend much more, proportionally, of their GDP in aid than we do. Surely we can afford to match their efforts. Additionally, improving the economies of local regions is a powerful diplomatic and public relations tool, and can stabilize regions that would otherwise be breeding grounds for dangerous and aggressive philosophies that attempt to justify attacks on the United States.
Many influential officials and military leaders have supported more foreign-aid spending, and the trend should continue. Our competitors abroad are seeking to create a market for themselves in impoverished regions. Ensuring that we can remain economically dominant should be a powerful incentive, as should the powerful effects that aid can have on human lives.
