ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo. (AP) - Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park has closed for the winter season.

The highway was shut down Tuesday. It connects Estes Park on the east and Grand Lake on the west.

Park officials say high winds, freezing temperatures and blowing and drifting snow have made conditions hazardous for drivers and plow operators.

The road is closed at the Colorado River Trailhead on the west and Many Parks Curve on the east.

Trail Ridge is billed as the highest continuous paved road in the United States, reaching 12,183 feet above sea level. It typically reopens in late May.

Other popular routes in the park remain open, including Bear Lake Road and roads through Moraine Park and Horseshoe Park.
