NEBO, N.C. (AP) - The U.S. Forest Service is conducting a prescribed burn in the Pisgah National Forest as part of a 10-year plan to restore 40,000 acres of the Grandfather Ranger District.
The agency will conduct the 150-acre burn Tuesday off Back Irish Creek Road, about 2 miles from the Table Rock Fish Hatchery in Burke County. The burn is intended to prepare the ground for the planting of shortleaf pines in early spring.
The Grandfather Restoration Project is restoring fire-adapted ecosystems by improving the conditions for native plant and wildlife and by controlling non-native species. It’s also meant to protect hemlocks against hemlock woolly adelgids.
