LIBERTY, Miss. (AP) - The 150th anniversary of a Civil War battle that freed more than 1,000 slaves will be commemorated Saturday.

The Enterprise-Journal of McComb (https://bit.ly/1tthxPB ) reports that Saturday’s Battle of Liberty events will include living history encampments around the Little Red School House.

Organizer Sam King says there also will be lots of artifacts, including some collections that may never have been on public display before.

The battle began Nov. 16, 1863, when Union cavalry captured 60 Confederates. About 1,700 Union troops arrived the next day from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, about 53 miles south-southwest. King says the Confederates pushed the Union troops back to the courthouse but ran out of ammunition.

Union troops returned to Baton Rouge on Nov. 19 with prisoners, plunder and the freed slaves.
