LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska officials are urging motorists to use extra caution during the holiday travel season in a year when traffic fatalities are up.

Officials say Nebraska has seen 201 traffic deaths this year as of Tuesday. More than one-fourth of those involved alcohol.

Col. David Sankey, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol, says 185 people died in Nebraska crashes at the same point last year.

His comments came during a news conference with Gov. Dave Heineman, first lady Sally Ganem and Mothers Against Drunken Driving.

Representatives from MADD asked motorists to tie a red ribbon to their vehicle as a show of support. Also attending were Todd and Jaimi Calfee, of Bennet, whose 18-year-old daughter, Alexis, was killed by a drunken driver in 2011. Alexis’ boyfriend, Chris Oberg, also died.
