PITTSBURGH (AP) - A 77-year-old western Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to spend 6 to 12 years in prison for bludgeoning his wife to death with a pipe wrench two years ago.

Joseph Manning pleaded guilty but mentally ill to third-degree murder in February for the death of his 71-year-old wife Mary Manning in the couple’s Whitehall home on March 31, 2012.

Defense attorney Charles LoPresti called the sentence “fair, appropriate and just.” LoPresti said his client has had mental health problems since the 1950s and was suicidal and on two dozen medications when he killed his wife.

The Allegheny County judge credited Manning for the 25 1/2 months that he has already spent in custody.
