NEW YORK (AP) - Rockefeller University has received approval from a City Council committee to expand its 14-acre campus.

The project includes a platform over the FDR Drive that would support a 160,000-square-foot, two-story building housing two dozen labs and 440 scientists.

The bio-medical research institution says the $240 million expansion is needed to attract new talent. It sits between the FDR that runs along the East River and York Avenue.

The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1hC0X83 ) says the project includes spending $8 million to fix the sea wall that supports the five-block waterfront esplanade. The school also will donate $150,000 to the conservancy group Friends of the East River Esplanade.

The deal was approved by the Council Land Use Committee on Thursday. The full Council is expected to approve it next week.
