PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) - Federal officials are recommending that the area around an old smelter in Pueblo be designated as a Superfund site.
The Colorado Smelter site is one of five industrial properties around the country that the U.S. Environmental Agency wants to help clean up. The proposal will be listed in the Federal Register on Monday. People will then have 60 days to submit comments on the proposal.
The Pueblo Chieftain reports that high levels of lead and arsenic were found at the site in 2010 and high levels of lead were also found in some yards in the surrounding neighborhood. Some children were also found to have reportable levels of lead.
