INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) - Officials have released more information about a man who was fatally struck by a train just outside the northeast Iowa city of Independence.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says 40-year-old Thomas Lee Davis was hit Thursday night by a Canadian National Railway train near the Wapsipinicon (wahp-sih-PIH’-nih-kahn) River. Train operators told authorities they observed a man lying on the railroad tracks prior to the accident.

Waterloo television station KWWL reports (https://bit.ly/1svO1HN ) the operators applied emergency brakes, but could not stop the train.

Authorities do not suspect foul play. Davis’ body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Ankeny.
