MORRIS, Ill. (AP) - A former Grundy County Health Department bookkeeper is free on bond after being charged with theft and official misconduct.

Renae Chronister is accused of stealing $47,041 over a period from Jan. 1, 2010 to May 21, 2012.

The Herald-News in Joliet reports (https://bit.ly/1ghIq0j) Chronister turned herself in to authorities Wednesday and posted $5,000 bond.

Chronister’s attorney Randy Gordon said Thursday he doesn’t believe his client stole any money. He adds Chronister intends to plead not guilty to the charges and push for a jury trial.

After being fired from the health department in February 2013, Chronister threatened to sue the county and the Board of Health. An investigation was prompted by indications cash was being recorded within the health department, but not being deposited with the Grundy County Treasurer’s office.
