COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - Columbus may let its police officers live farther away.

WTVA-TV reports the city’s Civil Service Commission is considering changing residency requirements.

Now, officers must be living somewhere in Lowndes County within a year of the date of their hiring.

The policy is meant to ensure off-duty officers can respond quickly if they are needed for an emergency.

The commission is considering a proposal to amend the policy and provide exemptions for good cause.
