SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Police in Savannah say a bicyclist has died after a collision involving machinery being used by a city maintenance crew.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police say 53-year-old Phillip Arthur Vanderburgh of Savannah was found on the ground and unconscious after the collision shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday on Highgate Boulevard. He was taken to Memorial University Medical Center, where he later died.

Police say a city storm water maintenance ditch cleaning crew was in the area and consisted of a dump truck and long-reach excavator. Investigators believe the bicyclist collided with the rear of the parked excavator as its arm rotated.
