LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - With a judge’s decision to strike down Arkansas’ anti-gay-marriage law, there are questions about what county clerks should do when they open on Saturday.
Clerks handle both voter registration and marriage licenses. Some courthouses will be open Saturday just for early voting in the May 20 primary, but the Carroll County clerk’s office issues marriage licenses on the weekend, beginning at 9 a.m. Officials there couldn’t be reached Friday night.
Janice Currie in Mississippi County told The Associated Press on Friday that she will tell any couples to return Monday so she has a chance to obtain guidance from the court.
Officials in Faulkner, Pulaski and Washington counties say they won’t issue marriage licenses Saturday.
The state has asked for a stay of the judge’s order.
