HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston school board has decided to fire five elementary school teachers for allegedly helping students cheat on state exams last year.

School district spokeswoman Tiffany Davila-Dunne confirmed the terminations Thursday night.

The Houston Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1iw2TCQ ) that attorneys for the teachers at Jefferson Elementary have said they are innocent. They can appeal their firing to the Texas Education Agency.

A district investigation into cheating allegations preceded the decision. The teachers had argued that the evidence comes from children who confused getting help on practice tests with the official state exams.
