PLATTEKILL, N.Y. (AP) - A 58-year-old Hudson Valley woman is facing animal cruelty charges after five horses under her care were found to be malnourished.
Constance Dirago of Plattekill is charged with five misdemeanor counts of failing to provide proper sustenance for animals.
State police say the charges stem from a two-month investigation that resulted in the confiscation of the horses, which were in immediate need of medical attention.
The animals were removed from a farm in the Town of Hamptonburgh and transported to a horse rescue farm in Orange County.
A subsequent investigation resulted in an additional 28 horses and ponies that were under Dirago’s care being placed with various area farms in Orange and Ulster counties.
Dirago is due in Town of Hamptonburgh Court later this month.
